Talbina is the Arabian barley porridge which the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) himself used to eat. It is very simple to cook – two spoons of dry porridge Talbina with the addition of one glass of water is enough for one serving. Boil the porridge for five minutes over low heat, and then add a glass of milk and a spoonful of honey.
So what are the benefits of the talbina? In the hadith, barley is considered to be very nutritious and helpful in preventing cough and gastritis. At least 20 statements of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) are referenced to the satta – barley powder.
Rasulullah (S.A.W.) recommended the sick and mourning to eat talbina: ‘Talbina gives peace to the patient’s heart and makes him active, relieves from sorrows and heavy thoughts’ (Bukhari, 7, 71, 593)
Ibn Qayyim stated that barley porridge perfectly suits for thirst quench. Avicenna in his work of the XI century “The Canon of Medical Science” wrote about the cleansing and fortifying effect of the barley grain broths on the human body.
